About us
H O R D E N & S C H I M M E L are fascinated by the cycle of life. Their love of working with parchment is characteristic of their art. The fragile figures, which they create, function as memories of a life lived before, but are placed in a new context.
For them, parchment is both traditional and unconventional. Symbolising both fragility and resilience, this material takes them to the intersection between life and death. These fragile works are not only in a new context, but are seen by the artists as a way of looking at our own minds.
The use of parchment as a medium symbolises their vision. By manipulating this material in their own unique way, they not only bring about physical transformation, but are also close to the skin of time.
The copper wires, like a halo around the figures, seem to want to reach out to their surroundings. Sparsely applied accents of gold leaf allude to the preciousness of fragments that seem seem seemingly unimportant in our lives and not immediately visible. They also make projections of the parchment figures a.o. in acrylic and in textiles.
